As a child I remember the first time I cast my line out and pulled in a fish. Oh, the absolute thrill of it!!! It was “Sun fish Saturday”…
I grew up in a small community where everyone knew everyone’s business. If you wanted to find out what was happening with your neighbor, you could generally hear about it at the Post office where we collected our mail daily. Events like “Sun fish Saturday” were talked about for weeks prior to the anticipated event! Other happenings much gossiped about included the Halloween Parade, and summertime community/church picnics in the grove which included the worlds BEST homemade chicken corn soup, baked goods, and cake walks. By the way, if you haven’t been in a cake walk, you’re missing out! A band plays tunes while everyone walks around a building/structure and they stop the music and if you are in the right location, you win a cake. It’s the best!
On Sun fish Saturday, my grandparents would meet our family at Speedwell Forge Lake which was about five minutes from where we lived. They were actually some of the people responsible for frying the fish that were caught. The lake was filled with young fisherboys and girls trying to catch some prize winning fish. Yes…there were prizes! I don’t remember ever winning any but the excitement of fishing was enough for me. On a side note, I did however win a racing competition at the bay with my box turtle…I digress.
At that time in my life I was fishing for fish. They were great times!
This morning as I was driving to my first appointment of the day, I noticed a man fishing along side the bridge. First question on my mind….”I wonder what he is fishing for”…
As I grew into a young adult I continued in my love for fishing. I became more particular about the location, though. My grandpa had a boat in Ocean City, Maryland and he would take me out fishing beyond the bay. Fishing in the ocean is an experience. You never know what you’re going to pull up and I found that so invigorating!
Jesus said, “Come follow me and I will make you fishers of men”… I remember as a child in the Lutheran Church I used to love belting out the song…”I will make you fishers of men, fishers of men, I will make you fishers of me, if you follow Me”…
My husband on occasion will ask me “what are you fishing for”… In general he means, what are you trying to achieve?
Many times at a local festival the children go “fishing” for a prize.
When drawing names in a giveaway it is often said the entrants names will be put into a fishbowl.
What are you currently fishing for? Life is too short to stop fishing. Fishing is oftentimes an adventure no matter what the outcome. Cast your line out in confidence, knowing everyday is an opportunity to catch something. Some days you might come up empty and others, your bucket might be filled to the brim but DON’T EVER stop trying…
